A young man from northern India is contemplating a climb of this highest of peaks. "It has always been my dream," Agni Gupta explains, "It seems crazy that after so many expeditions, not one man has succeeded summiting this peak." Agni is currently embarking on several exploratory climbs, and plans to conquer the peak by 1953. "I know the dangers," he says, "but if I am to perish, I might as well do it doing what I love." Agni is currently engaged to the beautiful Indira Chopra, though he has sworn that they will not marry until he has conquered Everest. "I couldn't live with myself otherwise."

A 25-year old man from China, hearing the news about someone climbing of Mount Everest, has decided to challenge Agni Gupta to conquer the peak in 1953. "I have always looked at a map and knew that I'd someday conquer the highest peak in the world. Today is that day," Ming Jin explains. "I know for a fact that trekking across the cold country of Tibet may be challenging, but I have been to the Himalayas before," he continues. Ming is currently unmarried and states that he knows many sherpas in the area of Mount Everest. He also has a passion for climbing and has been climbing at the border of Tibet and India in the Himalayas. "My goal is to climb and reach the top by 1952, and I know I can beat that young man from India," Ming finishes.

Upon hearing this news, the President Abha Kawale promises to fund this expedition, "It will raise people's spirits. We can't let China beat us to the top of a mountain that is on our doorstep." He is already organizing a team and has convinced Agni to set out earlier than previously planned in July of this year. Agni has his reservations, and believes it is too risky to attempt a summit so soon, but is training harder than ever for this climb. "I don't see why Ming and I can't do a joint expedition. Still, can't let the commies beat us."

Because of uncertainty about the conditions of the Mount Everest for climbing, Ming Jin, with full cooperation with the Chinese government, has decided to withdraw his plan to climb Mt. Everest. "Hopefully after this terrible nuclear fallout I will be able to climb the glorious mountain!" Mr. Jin stated.

On this day, June 13, 1951, history has been made. A previously unknown young man from northern India has attempted the impossible: he has conquered the summit of Mt. Everest despite innumerable challenges. The nation's joy, however, has been mingled with grief. Half the expedition died in an avalanche on the climb down, and even Agni, upon his return, has been diagnosed with bronchitis. The best of India's doctors are working to cure him, but unfortunately, it seems that he has little time left to live. Agni and Indira were married yesterday. Agni wishes to make the most of his last days, and spend them with his wife. He has been endowed with India's highest honors.

Celebrations erupt throughout Bombay! Agni Gupta, a man once thought certain to die, has made a miraculously recovery from the brink of the grave. His bewildered doctors have no idea how it could have happened, although one thing is certain. Agni's story is far from over.
